Spring-Summer, 2008

I'm late--I've been meaning to post a new letter for too long!  In recent months I wrapped up my fifth mystery for American Girl.  (Watch for details!)  I've been busy in my gardens.  And my husband and I spent ten days enjoying Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

In April, I traveled to beautiful Bowling Green, Kentucky.  I gave a program called "The Next Step:  Revision, Re-Visioning" at the Kentucky Writers Conference.  (You can find some of my notes from the workshop on the For Writers page.)

I also enjoyed attending some of the sessions myself.  Every time I hear an author speak, I learn something new about writing.

The next day I attended the Southern Kentucky Book Fest, a huge and wonderful event!  I had the chance to meet several authors I admire.   I also met lots of fantastic readers who stopped by my signing table.

We ended the day with an American Girl Tea.

Thank you, Kentucky readers!

On June 21, the Wisconsin chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustratos (SCBWI) held a celebration of reading at Martha Merrell's Bookstore and Cafe in Waukesha.  Wisconsin has a huge pool of talented authors and illustrators, and we're lucky to have a strong chapter.  If you're interested in writing or illustrating for children, I heartily recommend joining this organization!

And I'm just back from a trip to the Charleston, SC area with my two sisters.  It was a bit hot and muggy for my taste!  Exploring the area's culture and history, though, was wonderful.  The beautiful old Garden District of Charleston is brimming with stories about colonial days, pirates, the Civil War--all kinds of things to make a novelist take notes!

We also visited two historic sites out of the city.  That's me in front of one of the massive live oak trees at Middleton Plantation.  It's hundreds of years old.  If only trees could talk....

I don't have any public appearances scheduled for August.  The heirloom tomatoes and other vegetables in my garden will be claiming most of my attention!  And when time permits, I'm going to work on revising a manuscript that has been languishing for way too long.  I hope the rest of your summer is good!
