Autumn, 2007

I am having a wonderful autumn!  It's my favorite time of year, and we've had lots of warm, golden days to enjoy.  Scott and I have been busy tidying up the yard and getting ready for cold weather.

My big trip of the year was to Alaska for a mystery convention and some school visits.  You can read more about that by clicking here.

In October I attended the Women Writing the West Conference in Colorado Springs.  I'm honored to now be serving this dynamic organization as President.

Four WWW Presidents:  Me, Jacque Boyd (2007), Sheila Foard (2009), and Jane Kirkpatrick (2006)

We had a beautiful snowfall!  After the conference my friends Joyce Lohse and Sarah Rickman and I went to Garden of the Gods park to enjoy the scenery.

My next trip was closer to home--a short drive to Schaumburg, Illinois.  I started with an evening program at the public library.

These three photos were taken at Enders Salk Elementary.  I also visited St. Hubert's School.

I need to also thank the great students and staff at St. Paul's Catholic School in Genesee for their recent hospitality.

My friend Denice Ryan Martin received a grant from the Wisconsin Center for the Book that allowed me to visit St. Paul's.  Denice and I are both members of the Society of Children's Book Illustrators and Illustrators (SCBWI).  Her husband created this cool sign!

That evening I visited the beautiful public library in Waukesha, with some of the artifacts I've collected while working on the American Girl mysteries.  Thanks to librarian Kate Fitzgerald-Fleck to Martha Merrell's Books.

I've squeezed some time in for reading this autumn, too.  I recently enjoyed Little Klein, by Anne Ylvisaker, a surprising and engaging historical novel for young readers.  On the adult side, I just finished The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant, which I liked a lot.  My historical fiction book group will be discussing this soon, and I anticipate a lively conversation!  As the days grow shorter and colder, I look forward to settling down inside with lots more good books in the weeks to come.  May your autumn weeks be filled with warmth and great reads!
