I always love hearing from readers. Better still is getting a photograph! Here's Meghan P. dressed as Elspeth from Betrayal at Cross Creek for a school presentation. I think she looks grand! By the way, Betrayal at Cross Creek is out of print, but I have copies available. Email me if you'd like to order one. I've gotten several emails in the past couple of months from students working on book reports who wanted/needed biographical information. I guess I'd always figured that readers were more interested in the books than the author! But I was glad to help out. I've posted a new biography page that should make those reports easier to do. |

Like much of the country, we've been experiencing a cold spell. I was scheduled to visit the American Girl Club that meets at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Brookfield, WI, on February 2. The temperature registered minus two when my husband and I left home, and I wondered if anyone would want to come out in that kind of weather. I should have known that American Girl fans are too loyal to let a little thing like frigid temperatures stop them! Besides, what better place to warm up than a bookstore? |
Here I am sharing some of photographs and artifacts I've collected while researching my American Girl mysteries. |

There are lots of Kit and Josefina fans in the Milwaukee area. A couple of readers make sure I spell their names correctly. |
Renee, left, is one of my favorite booksellers! We worked together at Old World Wisconsin, and we're also in the same Historical Fiction discussion group. |

I also had a warm reception when I visited St. Maria Goretti Parish School
in Madison, Wisconsin. Thanks to the students for their great questions,
and to the coordinators for their flexibility!
As someone fortunate enough to work at home, for the most part, I don't mind the bitter cold. The view of snow and trees out the big windows in my office is peaceful, and I love all the birds clustering around the feeders. I've been getting lots of writing done! Winter is also one of the best times to curl up with a cup of cocoa and a good book. Right now I'm reading Hattie Big Sky, a 2007 Newbery Honor book written by Kirby Larson. It's about a sixteen-year-old trying to prove up a claim in Montana during World War I. I highly recommend it! I also just read a beautiful new picture book, Small Beauties: The Journey of Darcy Heart O'Hara, by Elvira Woodruff, with illustrations by Adam Rex. It's set during the sadness of the Irish potato famine, yet celebrates the power of a young child to help her family face the future with hope. This lovely book would be appreciated by both children and adults. Happy reading! |
