Scott and me, exploring on Skye.
Research Trip to Scotland

My husband Scott and I spent nine days in September visiting Scotland.  We spent most of our time on the Isle of Skye, where Elspeth's family in Betrayal at Cross Creek lived before immigrating to North Carolina, and we had a marvelous time exploring the beautiful landscape.  I found myself thinking a lot about everything that families like Elspeth's endured in the 1700s and 1800s.  The photograph above was taken on a walk near beautiful Loch Coruisk, and illustrates why so many of the Highland people felt oppressed in the deep forest environment of North Carolina!

I also did research relating to my first contemporary novel, which is scheduled to be published in the spring of 2005.  More details on that project later!

Betrayal at Cross Creek

Speaking of Betrayal at Cross Creek... my latest History Mystery seems to be resonating with readers in a special way.  I'm enormously grateful for all the reviews and comments.  To celebrate, I'm holding another contest for a handwoven bookmark.  See the Contest page for more information.

New Book off to the Presses!

In August I did the final proofread for my next book, a mystery called Danger at the Zoo.  It will be published in spring by American Girl, and will feature a very familiar main character.  Here's a hint:  I did most of my research in Cincinnati!

Autumn Calendar

I have a busy fall lined up, with events scheduled in Wisconsin, Kansas, Indiana, and Illinois.  I look forward to meeting folks at each stop!  See the Calendar page for event information.

Autumn is my favorite time of year.  Our gardens are bursting with purple asters and goldenrods, and the leaves have turned red and yellow.  In fall, it feels as if the earth is giving me permission to slow down--to curl up with good books, or to sink deeply into a novel-in-progress.  I hope that your autumn is also filled with whatever makes you most happy!
